The intent of the song has been completely lost in the arrangement/vocal gymnastics. It just needed to retain a little of the originals sweetness.

I think it just had to do with the fact that Kris Allen (that's his name) had a better final performance than Adam, but Adam was clearly the stronger musician and is proving it to the entire world as we speak :) We all know this show is just a popularity contest in the end.
